The Samana peninsula, where the town of Las Galeras is located, is a strip of land with a long history. In the late 1600s, the area was home to pirates and in the 1800s became a haven for African-American freemen. Now, almost 200 years later, it is a destination for visitors to the Dominican Republic who want to escape the all-inclusive resorts found in the DR’s popular resort towns.
Las Galeras is the best place in the region to see whales during their yearly mating season from mid-January to mid-March. The Dominican Republic has some of the best laws in the Caribbean protecting the humpback whales. In addition, the waters around Samana are amazing for sport fishing.
